As a follow up to my post last week titled: ‘Two simple steps to increase your blog traffic’, I just had to mention Mack Collier’s excellent post on The Viral Garden, titled ‘Five reasons why your company blog sucks’.
Collier uses a catchy headline to draw attention and mentions key points that one MUST change if running a company blog. To summarise, these include:
1 – Using the company blog as a billboard. Collier says to not treat the blog as an “in your face” promotional tool, but rather as a tool to create value for your readers.
2 – Not answering or encouraging comments. Comments are a great way to get insights into what your customers want from you and your products/services, and acting on their comments helps raise positive awareness of your blogging efforts, which ultimately reflects well on your company.
3 – Rarely adding new posts. Collier says that even if your posting pattern is rather infrequent, try to post ‘regularly’, as in the same time each week.
4 – Your blog has little or no pictures, and is visually boring. Collier states that we are visual creatures, and that we want to see “bright and pretty pictures”. Enough said.
5 – Your blog creates little to no value for your readers. Collier feels that most blogs spend too much time promoting themselves, and not enough time creating valuable and relevant content for their readers.
